Electrotherapy (TENS)
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses mild electrical impulses delivered through electrodes placed on the skin. It is commonly used as an option for managing certain types of pain and may be considered alongside other physiotherapy approaches.
At Nova, TENS is not used as a one-size-fits-all treatment. Your physiotherapist will consider your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals before deciding whether it is appropriate. Where suitable, it can form part of a broader programme that may also include exercise, manual therapy, education or other physiotherapy techniques.
How We Treat Electrotherapy (TENS)
Before applying TENS, your physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms and check whether there are any reasons the treatment may not be suitable for you. The electrode placement and stimulation settings are selected according to the treatment area and your individual circumstances.
During the session, small electrodes are positioned on the skin and connected to the TENS device. The electrical stimulation is adjusted to a comfortable level and monitored throughout treatment. Your physiotherapist will explain how the equipment works and whether TENS may be useful as part of your wider management plan.
